Leaving Addiction Treatment: Planning the First Week

Transitions can create gaps in housing, transportation, medication follow-through, food, structure, and support. Planning these details is a recovery tool, not an administrative extra.

Confirm the first night

Write down where you will sleep, how you will get there, how you will enter, what could make the space risky, and where you can go if the plan changes.

Protect health follow-through

Confirm prescriptions, pharmacy access, appointments, transportation, and who can answer questions. Do not change medication or withdrawal plans based on a worksheet.

Reduce unstructured gaps

Plan broad morning, afternoon, and evening blocks. Include a body need, recovery action, useful task, connection, and rest or enjoyment.

Prepare a backup

Choose a second ride, second support person, safe public place, crisis option, and response for a strong craving or unsafe environment.

Take the next useful step.

Keep essential help free. Use a longer workbook only when more structure and repeated practice would be useful.
